Unique designs for a city balcony: decorative nail polish pots

Nail polish transforms plain white planters into quirky designs to set off geraniums and other balcony plants decoratively.

A DIY project that’s as simple as it is quick, all you need is white pots, nail varnish in a variety of colours, wooden sticks for stirring and a large bowl or other container of water.

Instructions

First drip nail polish in your chosen colours into a bowl filled with water.

Tip: As no two finished pots are alike, several of them standing next to each make a great feature.

Finally, quickly submerge the whole pot in the water until the entire outer surface is wet. Drain the pot and leave to dry. Your unique artwork is finished.

Vertical shutter garden

Colourful geraniums, foliage plants and herbs in hand-sewn oilcloth bags transform old shutters into an on-trend vertical garden with minimum effort.

For these stylish planting bags you will need Calliope® M or Calliope® L, several pieces of 50cm x 24cm oilcloth, a sewing machine or needle and thread, eyelet pliers, eyelets and hooks for hanging.

To make the bags take a piece of oilcloth, measuring 50 x 24 cm. With the reverse sides facing out, fold it widthways and sew together along the sides, leaving an opening opposite the folded end. Then turn the bag right side out to hide the seams. Attach two eyelets to one layer of the oilcloth at the opening on the right and left. Plant the bags up with geraniums and hang them on hooks on the shutter.

In a homemade oilcloth bag, the colourful geranium becomes a stylish eye-catcher on an old window shutter.

When choosing a spot for geraniums it should be kept in mind that this plant is a sun-worshipper. To thrive and flower throughout the season, it needs a place with full sun or at most partial shade. Apart from sun the second important part for Calliope® is water. Because as much as they love the sun and survive periods of drought, they still need watering.

During the season it is important to remove the dead flowers by breaking off the flower stem at the base – this will encourage more flowers to be produced. Enjoy more flowers in vibrant colours until late into the Autumn!
